Zinnia Botanical Study: From Sketchbook to Art Licensing Collection

What started as a summer stroll with my dog, Maple, turned into a full botanical surface pattern collection. Discovering a sun-drenched corner of Zinnias on the South Coast of England was a rare treat—their bold shapes and vibrant petals immediately demanded a place in my sketchbook.

The Creative Process: A "Digital Florist"

I captured the Zinnias alongside the delicate blue wildflowers weaving through them. Back in my studio, I translated these hand-drawn sketches into digital illustrations, meticulously arranging them into lush, layered compositions.

It felt like being a "digital florist"—a poetic nod to my childhood dream of floral design. This collection represents that full-circle moment, blending traditional botanical art with modern surface design techniques.

Production-Ready Patterns for Art Licensing

To meet the needs of Art Directors and Product Developers, I developed this study into a comprehensive, commercial-ready collection. The transition from a single "hero" print to a cohesive range includes:

  • High-Resolution (300 DPI) Seamless Repeats: Perfect for large-scale production.

  • Co-ordinates & Blender Prints: Designed for mix-and-match product lines.

  • Versatile Colourways: Ranging from vibrant "pops" to sophisticated heirloom vibes.

Bringing Art to Life on Products

As a surface pattern designer, I envision these prints across multiple industries. Whether it’s a striking wallpaper, wall art, luxury kitchen textiles, or boutique gifts, the collection is optimized for:

  • Placement Prints & Spot Illustrations

  • Collage-style Surface Effects

  • Textile & Apparel Licensing

I’m personally drawn to the textured yellow hero pattern and the delicate blush floral trellis, with tiny blue flowers but I’d love to know—which colour way would speak to your brand’s aesthetic?
